Clavichords

My offerings for clavichords is based on two models which I feel to be the most useful and acoustically optimized types of clavichords in existence.

Unfretted Clavichord after Hubert

This instrument is a wonderful, mid-sized clavichord that is acoustically resonant, and features the correct balance of ease of playabiltiy and feedback that makes a clavichord the wonderul teaching instrument that it is. I mean to say that a really good clavichord provides immediate feedback to the player when you are not paying attention to your playing. This feedback is both aural and physical. A great clavichord as stated by Keith Hill should mimic the sound of thought. A fretted clavichord features notes throughout much of the treble and mid range that share a set of strings. This feature allows for less tension on the soundboard, and is part of what gives the instrument such a wonderful, resonant sound. However, it does limit the playability of some pieces that feature half steps that are unplayable. This is often not an issue for many players who are looking for an instrument to play music largely before the classical period.

My basic offering for this instrument features a five-octave span from FF to fff, ebony naturals and stained bone-topped sharps, with a gessoed and painted finish and four turned screw-in legs. The price for such an instrument is $12,000.

Unfretted Clavichord after Friederici

Friederici’s instruments were much appreciated by contemporaries of his period. C.P.E. Bach held his instruments in high admiration. The Friederici design, in my opinion, is the most developed of the large, unfretted clavichord.

Similar to the Hubert, my Friederici is offered in five octaves from FF to fff, ebony naturals and stained bone-topped sharps, and a gessoed and painted finish. A set of four screw-in legs are provided, although other options are available. The price for an unfretted clavichord is $18,000.

Other options such as hardwoods such as walnut or cherry with a shellac finish, platform stands, music drawers, fancy legs, and others at the request of the customer can gladly be quoted for you.

Below are pictures and recordings of a recently finished fretted clavichord after Hubert, but with an expanded range from FF to fff to encompass the full five octaves most players are accustomed to.. This instrument features a platform stand, all walnut construction finished with shellac, and a frame-in-panel bookmatched lid very similar to the original. The price for this instrument is $16,000.
